Lake Michigan Water Users -
Emergency Well Use

You may have seen our recent Enews article with information on current CCR updates.
(If not, CLICK HERE)… Here are a few more tips, specifically for Lake Michigan water users to keep in mind, regarding emergency well use, sampling and reporting criteria.

Emergency Well Use
Many Lake Michigan water suppliers keep their wells for emergency use. Make sure to check your water supply contract and IEPA regulations for emergency well use criteria.

Sampling Criteria
The IEPA requires the same sampling protocol for emergency wells as for active wells. Make sure you check your Sample Demand Letters from the IEPA to ensure you are following their requirements. The IEPA’s Drinking Water Watch Website http://163.191.83.31/dww/index.jsp is a great resource to confirm your required monitoring schedule.

Reporting Requirements
Check the new CCR requirements to make sure you are accurately reporting Emergency Well Use. Every time you use your emergency wells you need to inform the IEPA. Your monthly monitoring reports should reflect the emergency well use –even if it is only turning the wells on for sampling.
