Web-Based GIS
Want to make the most of your GIS? Allow more people to access the data? Then a web-based GIS may be right for you!
Baxter & Woodman can develop a GIS website with advanced server controls and tools for specialized operations, and either help you set it up on your servers or host the website on ours. A GIS website is one of the most cost-effective ways to provide open access to public information.
CASE STUDY:
Village of Bartlett, IL: GIS Web Portal
We recently implemented a GIS web portal for the Village of Bartlett. Elected officials wanted to be sure that the Village’s GIS would be useful for both staff and residents. Now, users can obtain answers to location-based questions such as, “Where are the bike trails in Bartlett?” or “Where is my polling place?”
Following a GIS system needs assessment, Baxter & Woodman designed a master plan and created an implementation plan for the Village. The Master Plan included a detailed technical plan for integration of GIS with existing systems, including street management, permitting, asset management, document management, and 911 systems. The project also included training Village staff and creating a public access GIS website as the pilot project.
The Pilot Project established a customized internet-based GIS website incorporating County data and local information such as the location of city facilities, schools, parks, and other points of interest; public safety information including the current location of registered sex offenders; as well as election layers, zoning layers and other layers of interest to the community. There are a variety of customized search tools and table display for easy access.
The website was built on ESRI’s ArcGIS Server technology using the Application Development Framework (ADF), which provides a mature and elegant solution for a polished website.
This project included an educational session for Village staff to provide an overview of GIS and initiate discussions into the possible solutions GIS can provide each department. Specific examples of projects and related GIS work were presented during the session.
We are now looking beyond the pilot project to include sophisticated tools for creating mailing labels; create tiers of security to provide controlled access; and enable update capability to authorized users to report incidents and inspections.
